Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was taken in Arches National Park on the Windows Trail.
Time
Usually, I'm waiting on golden hour to head out, but when the sun is out and bright, I head out to start planning for later. Late morning was when this photo was taken. I go everywhere looking for spots! This arch in this photo is the second window arch of two. The first arch is quite easy to get up to from the front, but the second takes a little bit of climbing. When I say climb, it's more like scrambling and although easy for me, it still isn't for everybody. It wasn't until I climbed up there that everybody started to follow my lead. With how big this arch is, I figured I head back down and see what it looks like with the tiny little people up there! I was down there when this couple were up there sitting down. I waited for them to get up and snap, snap. Took two photos before they were gone behind the arch. Got lucky.
Lighting
Like I said before, this couple was sitting down for a bit of time before I took this photo. It gave me plenty of time to figure out how to play around with the lighting. I found a spot where I could get the sun to just peek from behind the arch, turned the wheel to f/16, and got the sun star that I wanted. In my opinion, it couldn't have got any better!
Equipment
I have a ton of equipment but as far as this photo goes, I used my main camera. A Sony A7RII coupled with the Sony 16-35mm f/4. My other equipment include 24-70mm f/4, Rokinon 12mm fisheye, and Sigma Art 20mm f/1.4 w/adapter for my Sony. I also have a backup camera that used to be my main man before buying the Sony. It is a Nikon D810 with Nikon lenses. Oh, and can't forget my favorite Gitzo Traveler tripod!
Inspiration
I'm always traveling to all the National Parks checking out places that I have never been to. I recently made a major move to the west coast from Florida after being there my whole life. So, I wanted to explore and take beautiful photos while I do so.
Editing
Of course. The sun was just harsh so I definitely played around with this one until I was able to get this final product.
In my camera bag
I mostly carry around my F-Stop Kenti camera bag everywhere I go, unless I'm backpacking/camping somewhere. The stuff I usually don't go without are the Sony A7RII, 16-35mm f/4, 24-70mm f/4, Rokinon 12mm Fisheye (never know!,) and the Sigma Art 20mm f/1.4 (for night photos.) I usually carry my Gitzo Traveler tripod with me as well and a small packable chair from REI. My bag also consists of small items such as cleaning brushes, blower, 10 batteries, a oversized microfiber towel from REI, and more.
Feedback
This photo pretty much proved to me that taking the best pictures doesn't always happen during sunrise or sunset hours. With a little bit of playing around, you can really make amazing stuff! I'd say the best advice for everyone would be, no matter how good you think you are, there is always room for learning. Keep taking classes whether you're a beginner, or a straight up pro. If you take one thing from every class you take, it was worth the money. Make sure to check out my website and give me a follow on instagram as well!
