Behind The Lens

Location
The photo is one of my favourite in this session. I was with bunch of fellow photographers on a photo shoot near my hometown. The location was carefully chosen and we were near a small lake with plenty of cliffs, trees and nice views all around. We had this beautiful model and plenty of time to take some great shoots. In this situation she is standing on a cliff and behind her is the lake. Firstly I thought that the wind will ruin our photos but actually it gave very genuine expression and made the photo more dynamic.
Time
The photo was taken in the middle of the day. Usually it's not the perfect time for portraits, but the day was slightly overcast which helped a lot with reducing the shadows on the face.
Lighting
I used only natural light. To fill up the shadows I had a small silver reflector on the right side.
Equipment
The picture was shot on D7000 with 85 1.4 lens. I love that combo. The background blur, seperation and sharpness are in perfect balance for portrait work.
Inspiration
I love shooting portraits. And I like to concentrate on the expression- to represent an emotion, feeling or just a memory. I had this picture in my head of a 60s black and white classical american video clip- it was very nostalgic but in the same time showing that dynamics of the forever young spirit. Like a mix from Lana Del Ray's Blue Jeans and the Neighbourhood's Sweater Weather. Firstly I thought that the wind will ruin my photo but actually it gave it a very genuine look and added to the character. I really love that style and it turned out to be great image.
Editing
Yes, I used the vsco color grading presets to convert the photo to black and white. I added some mate finish using curves and general corrections. I worked mainly to find the good balance between the black and white shades. I don't usually airbrush skin- I don't like the plastic doll look.
In my camera bag
I use mostly a cheap 85 1.4 manual focus and 50 1.8G nikon lenses for portraits. Sometimes I borrow 35 1.4 lens it has great character for environmental portraits.
Feedback
I would say the most important thing is to go on every shooting with one picture in the mind you want to create. And to give every image some kind of emotion. So stay inspired and convert the ideas, feelings or everything that has made some impact on your life in a picture.
