Cape Blanco first lit its lamp on December 20th, 1870. It sits on a 200 foot cliff. Heavy wind and rain are very common in this area. There are accounts of several ship wrecks in these waters. One recorded event was a submarine that sat off the coast and launched a float plane that used the lighthouse as a navigation tool for bombing runs.
