The bright sun was low on the horizon as I headed home. I passed by two girls begging. They stood out because of their refinement and charm. They were in an awkward position of having to beg for their families needs, something no human ought have to do. I walked by, continuing on my way, but then my inner voice nagged me to return. I opened my bag, lifted my camera to check the settings and said, “Look at me.” The younger one refused. “No, you will call police.'' “ I won’t. Why would I call the police?” The eldest gracefully stepped forward. “You know why.” “I’ll pay you 50Rs for a picture.” They exchanged a swift glance, silently agreed, posed, grabbed the money and ran, arms flailing like pinwheels in the wind. I wish I could adopt these beautiful, innocent children, take them from the street where they have to beg for their bread. The ink dried as I developed the picture, but the impression of the girls in their lively traditional Afghan, Pakistani Pashtun dress remains a living, growing, haunting image.
