Behind The Lens

Location
this photo was shot at Wasatch Mountain Golf Course in Midway, Utah. I don't golf. I was here to be part of a charity event for Make-a-Wish Foundation. My friend is the sponsor of the event and I create an art piece as the grand prize offered by drawing. I get to follow my friends in a golf cart and shoot photos of anything that catches my eye. The golf course is in the mountains so wildlife is abundant in and around the golf course
Time
It was midmorning in early July when I found these fledglings roosting on a wooden fence waiting for their parents to feed them. Off to the right a parent is flying in and that is why they are all looking in that direction
Lighting
Lighting was all natural. they were too far away for any type of supplemental light to be effective. I was fortunate that the sun was in the correct spot to light the birds really well
Equipment
I used a Nikon D300s and the Nikon 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G VR zoom lens. this was the longest lens I owned at the time. This camera setup was handheld for the image. I was sitting in a golf cart and braced my arms against my knees for stability. the lens was at it's 400mm limit
Inspiration
The inspiration for this shot was the birds themselves. I don't think it would be common to find 3 baby birds sitting all together like that. Timing allowed me to see a really special moment and I was fortunate to have my kit with me. Catching that moment is still a story I tell
Editing
I have not yet learned to post-process photos so I don't do anything but crop them because that is all I can do without software that allows photo manipulation. I learned to shoot originally with film and it was expensive to shoot a bunch of shots. Even in the digital era I still tend to set up my photos carefully and click the shutter minimally. So this shot was cropped because there was extra stuff outside the main subjects.
In my camera bag
My kit contains a Nikon D810, which has been my goto setup with a Nikkor 105 mm f2.8 lens. Recently I upgraded my second body to a Nikon D500. I bought this body for it's lowlight capabilities. Normally the Nikkor 16-80mm f2.8-4 lens resides on the D500 and is the setup I carry when I want to travel light. For those special occasions where I need a wide view the Tamron 10-24mm f3.5-4.5 fills the void and a Tamron 150-600mm f5-6.3 helps me reach out long and far for those subjects that don't like us getting close or the animals that might cause severe bodily harm. The Nikon speedlight system works wonders for all my supplemental lighting and I use a Manfrotto tripod when needed.
Feedback
the best advice I can offer to capture a similar image is to take the time to go out into the world. After you get out, be sure to look everywhere. Springtime is a wondrous time to find such scenes. A the altitude we were at early July is when the little birds are fledging, so I would also state it would be important to learn the seasons where you are and what occurs at different times of the year. When I travel to foreign destinations I do research on-line but supplement that information by asking local photography stores what would be good to photograph while I am in their area.
