There is no doubt from this rooster's haughty profile that he is lord of all he surveys.

Behind The Lens
Location
My wife and I like to just wander around interesting places to find interesting images. Walking around Ybor City in Florida, heard some chickens squawking/ There, behind a fence, stood a rooster who was most assuredly not just the master of his flock but his kingdom as well.Time
Late afternoon, hoping for the good light as the sun slowly dropped in the sky.Lighting
The vibrant colors of the plummage asked for bright light to bring out the variations in color. The indirect light allowed the rooster to dominate the foreground while the brighter background washed its colors out in combination with the depth of field.Equipment
Nikon D3300 with a Nikor DX 55-200 at 200. Handheld at 1/1000 with a 6.3 aperature.Inspiration
With a strong Cuban and Caribbean heritage, Ybor City is known for its cigar factories and shops, its links to smuggling, cuisine from the islands. Through it all are the chickens who roam freely throughout the city that I feel embody the attitude of the city's history and people. The strength and confidence of this rooster struck me as that embodiment.Editing
I do very simple post. In this case, I used paint.net to adjust lighting (contrast, white balance)In my camera bag
A small bag is what I carry. My D3300, Nikor DX lenses - 15-55, 18-140 and 18-55. A Dolica tripod and remote control for long exposures completes the bag. The lenses cover almost all the things and ways that I photograph and stepping around covers the rest.Feedback
For city and town photos, a medium tele with a fairly quick aperture is best for the type of candid images I look for. Always keep your eyes open and be patient where you can and quick where you need to be. Go in the "off hours" if seeking out more local color. It is easy to get lost in throngs of people and overlook the smaller things that make a location unique.
