Great gray owls generally are nocturnal animals and it's extremely rare to see them during the day. During winter when prey is scarce they do extend their hunting hours to the dawn and dusk hours as well. After locating this owl on a shrub at the edge of a field where it rested and preened for the entire day, I waited for the opportune moment. As the sun started to descend in the horizon, the owl flew across the field to a perch as it listened for rodents in the snow and grass. I was ready. Just as it swooped down for its prey I was able to fire off a burst. This was the one image where the low sun illuminated this owl's face and beautiful yellow eyes as it flew past me to catch a vole. I won't forget this experience of being able to watch this magnificient creature successfully hunt for prey in the wild.
