The photo was taken at my home in Southwest Michigan. The squirrel lived in a tree just outside my door and the wooden thing he is sitting on is a planter dividing my deck from the walk to my back door.Time
Every morning i would place the crusts from my toast on the planter. For good measure, I used peanut butter to entice him from the tree.Lighting
The photo was taken in natural light. My door faces East. The squirrel came to expect the treats so i decided to sit in my doorway with my camera in position.Equipment
I use all Canon equipment. My lens was a 24-105L lens.Inspiration
It was the challenge to get him comfortable so near the door; much more of a challenge than taking the photo. The camera was hand held but steadied by the door jam.Editing
I pushed the contrast a bit in Photoshop, the CS6 versionIn my camera bag
Now i own the Canon Mark III and the 24-105 is my go to lens. Other equipment varies but my lenses are all L lens quality. My back up equipment is a 50D so I always have that if needed. If i need wide angle I use a non L lens by Canon and for fun I have a Sigma fisheye and a converted 20D for Infrared.Feedback
I bet I have hundreds of images of creatures that live in my yard. I plant Hostas for rabbits, and plants to entice hummingbirds and butterflies and dragonflies. Have your camera ready. If i hope to capture insects I use my 100 macro or for deer, sandhill cranes, turheys and swans i treated mtself to the 28-300. It is heavy, especially for a woman, but definitely a sweet piece of glass!
