Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken from the patio of the apartment I lived in at the time. I’ve found you don’t necessarily have to travel to exotic locales. The most interesting shots can be found just outside your door.

Time

Mid to late afternoon. Whenever you’re taking photos of animals, wild or tame, you are definitely on their schedule rather than your own. I sat on my patio and waited until this female Anna’s hummingbird showed up.

Lighting

This was outdoors in natural lighting/ shade. It took some work in Lightroom to get it to look like this.

Equipment

I’m an amateur, so there’s much I don’t know about equipment and such. This was taken with my Pentax K-500 and the basic lens it came with.

Inspiration

My mother loved hummingbirds and always had feeders out to attract them. She loved watching their antics! Watching them always reminds me of her, so I keep a feeder full for them in memory of her.

Editing

As I mentioned above, the lighting was not the best. I ran it through Lightroom to brighten it up.

In my camera bag

I have spine/neck issues and can’t carry around a bag full of equipment, so it’s usually just my camera & prime lens, sometimes my macro lens. Most of the time it’s just my trusty iPhone 7 Plus.

Feedback

Patience, and take lots and lots of shots. With wild birds, especially hummingbirds, you can end up waiting at the ready for awhile until one shows up and they move fast!
