Haralson apples are among the last apples to ripen in North Dakota, and they are usually harvested early to avoid damaging cold conditions. Damaging temperatures did not come until very late in 2016, and the apple leaves were coloring and falling while the fruit was still ripening. Good quality apples on branches with senescing and missing leaves makes for an unusual contrast.
