Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was taken on the riverfront of the Historic District in downtown Savannah, Georgia. While we live in Northeast Tennessee where the weather is generally winter-ish in January, we noticed one weekend that the upcoming weather forecast for Savannah was predicted to be warm and sunny, with highs in the 80s! We took off on a whim, and were pleasantly surprised with the beautiful summer-like weather. Wearing shorts and T-shirts, we were blessed to spend Friday and Saturday evenings on the riverfront without even the slightest chill.
Time
We had enjoyed a nice dinner on the riverfront late Saturday evening, then took a stroll down by the river and enjoyed the beautiful sunset. I shot this image just before dusk, when everything was aglow and alive from the last rays of the setting sun.
Lighting
The light in the skies was gorgeous at this time of day, just after the sun had set to the west behind the city bridge. The sky lit up and caught my eye with its hues of pink, blue and soft yellows, along with the last rays of the setting sun as it cast a beautiful warm glow on the passing ship.
Equipment
While the shot was unplanned, I was carrying my camera with a wide-angle lens and a tripod... They truly are an extension of my arm! You just never know! And when you are not planning any particular photoshoot, and you happen upon a scene like this, you get so excited you wonder if you can even set your tripod up! You have merel seconds to catch that special glow, and you do everything in your power as you race against time to capture that image.
Inspiration
I was totally inspired by the serenity of the scene, and how soothing it was. It was euphoric and dreamy, and the whole scene transported me away from the hub-bub and stress of everyday life.
Editing
I always shoot in Camera Raw and process in Photoshop. My method of processing varies from photo to photo, so I'm not sure that I have a one-size-fits-all regime for post-processing. The thing that intrigues me most in post-processing is playing up the light as captured in Camera Raw. While editing can sometimes be a chore, it becomes sheer joy when you "look for the light". I often feel that every photographer should become their own "Master of Light" when it comes to post-processing.
In my camera bag
Normally, I carry a Canon crop camera and two lens: a wide-angle and a mid-range zoom. I do carry several different types of filters, but I find myself returning over and over to a good circular polarizer, even for a darker scene like this.
Feedback
Day or night, the charm of old Savannah is so inspiring that you can't really get a "bad" photo! It's important to walk the city, especially the riverfront, and allow yourself to become totally immersed in its charm. You can't go wrong, and you'll automatically have that inspiration!
