A young juvenile northern mockingbird tests its wings while performing a balancing act on a strand of barbed wire at the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge in California. Mockingbirds are song birds but act more like birds of prey, watching from high perches for insects, rodents, lizards and even small birds. They often impale dead insects on thorns or barbed wire, which has earned them the nickname "butcher bird".

Magnificent (once again), Nina! I love "mockers," but hope he doesn't eat the Lady Bug (cos I love them, too!).

Great timing! And you with a camera in your hand :) Sorry about the "Peer Award" - as you may notice, I'm going to keep nagging VB about the awards. We've had several "conversations" about it. Everybody should write them!

Another fantastic shot Nina! Interesting about them being nicknamed butcher birds. They have a species of magpie-like birds called the butcher bird in Australia. Quite a diff bird but they were named for a similar reason ...getting their name from their habit of hanging captured prey on a hook or in a tree fork, or crevice. ...
