The longest Glacier in France, the Mer de Glace. This Glacier is rapidly retreating, the amount of area lost since 1970 is quite unbelievable. On the stairs down to the Glacier there are signs marking out the level of the Glacier at different times in history. The first sign marks the level in 1970, there are many, many flights of stairs down before you reach the Glaciers current surface.
