Before traveling, I always scope out potential photography locations on Google Earth. Just before my last trip to the Hawaiian Islands, I spotted what appeared to be a hole in a lava shelf on the North Shore of Kauai, around the corner from a local surf beach. So, early one morning on the trailing edge of a rain storm, I packed my gear into the jeep, and headed out. Finding this spot took about two miles of some of the muddiest dirt road I've ever driven, and another half-mile walk, including a few hundred yards of horizontal sliding along a small cliff face... all on a hope. But boy, was it worth it. As I got closer, I recognized the unmistakable sound of a "thunder hole," and my heart rate grew with anticipation. When I finally saw it, I couldn't have been happier.
