I took this picture in the middle of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda. Was a real adventure, walking through the forest for about 4 hours in the morning with a gun escort and a 10 kilo foto bag.Time
We started early in the morning, around 6 in the morning and drove about 2 hours to the start of the trail, after 4 hours walking through rough terrain we encountered the Kahungye group where this little guy was having fun. This particular photo was taken at 11:40 in the morning.Lighting
It was a great day. the light came through the tree leafs making it smooth just like a dreamEquipment
I took the photo with a Nikon D600, a 200-500mm f/5.6 lens, no flash or tripod. Focal length for this picture was 280mmInspiration
This adventure was on my bucket list for a long time and I was determined to document this moment in the best possible way... so much that I carried my photo equipment through muddy trails, making literally penetrable the Impenetrable Forest. Once in the presence of this beautiful giants I made use of my best lens to get every detail as I would be there next to them. Still get goosebumps when I see them and remember how it was to be there.Editing
Post processing was kept to a minimum. The photo shows exactly how it was and that was my goal. I took a little of the green not to overpower the image and give a central point to the gorilla. In my camera bag
Normally for outdoors I carry in my bag too much and i suffer for it (or better yet, my back suffers). I carry my trusty D600 with a prime 50mm f/1.4 One of the best lens I have used, makes every photo a bit special. Also a 28-70mm f/2.8 a great lens that can go from a wide angle to a nice portrait keeping the quality. A very good lens to take when its not only about the scenery but also about people and you want to change fast. Then also I like carrying my personal rock, the 200-500m f/5.6, a great lens with wich I took this photo and allows me to get close to any subject anywhere be it birds in flight to little snails on top of trees. Have also a travel tripod and a stopper from LEE that i use for lakes, waterfalls etc.Feedback
If you want to get a photo like this one there is some advice I can give. Get out there! Go and enjoy. Take what you need, make that extra mile. Try to be as close as possible without being intrusive, you will see on your pictures that you were to close as their faces change into something that can be, fear, anger, panic.. To get a picture like this one you need to be integrated, they need to see you and not fear you. This is achieved when you simply enjoy the moment. I was actually a couple of minutes not taking any picture. I just looked around and took in what was happening to me at that moment. My pictures for me are reminders of experiences and if I did not feel anything then I sure won't feel it after 5 months at home. So biggest advice is to Enjoy!
