Location
This is sunrise at Penarth Pier in south Wales. It's one of the most photographed and visited spots in the region. The pier dates back to the 18th century, with an art deco pavillion (not pictured - behind me) that dates back to the 1930s.Time
This was taken on a bitterly cold December morning. With wind chill it was well below zero. I was loitering around the pier for some time waiting for the good light - and for some other photographers to move on! I was amazed that they packed up and left right when the light started getting good.Lighting
There's no extra lighting here - I waited for the sky to do the hard workEquipment
Camera: NIKON D810 Aperture: f/8 ISO: 100 Shutter Speed: 1/50 Focal Length: 16mmInspiration
It's a heavily photographed location so I felt it would be challenging to put a unique spin on it. I decided to arrive for sunrise in winter and catch some of the symmetry - winter being a time when as few people as possible would be there and thankfully the sunrise gave me a really beautiful backdrop to work with.Editing
I shoot RAW and try to keep my image as neutral and flat as possible. I find that Lightroom is best for lens corrections and distortion correction (admittedly I forgot to correct the distortion here!), then I import to Macphun Luminar to punch up the colours and the rich toning in the boardwalk wood.In my camera bag
I'm a full time pro so my kit bag is fairly large. I'm rarely without my Nikon D810 and at least three lenses. My favourites are the Venus Optics Laowa 12mm which is a great lens for architecture and super wide angles, the Nikkor 16-35mm which is a bit more versatile as a wide angle plus has a thread to attach filters, and the Nikkor 28-300mm which is an all-rounder zoom. Of course, my Benro TGP17C tripod goes everywhere that it's allowed!Feedback
Penarth Pier is easily accessible from Cardiff. The light here is really good at both sunrise and sunset, year round. Generally the pier is far less busy for sunrise. The summer months are exceptionally busy, so parking may be an issue.
