Location
I live and work in Moscow, Russia. For this shoot we rented out a cafe for a night, so no one would disturb us.Time
We shooted for a whole night: changed three costumes, make-up and tried several locations. It was in the end of the night, almost morning probably around 6AM.Lighting
The light comes from the projector on the ceiling and random footage YT video.Equipment
I used Canon Mark II, Canon 24-105 f/4L USM lens and tripod.Inspiration
The model is a quite famous cosplayer, but I wanted to transform them for a fashion look. It was outside the 'comfort zone' and test for both of us and they were quite skeptical at first. They used to be under the spotlight, but rarely like this, when they doesn't control their appearance – the concept and clothes was my job. The makeup was a job of my friend. The photo itself shows that not everything is like it appears to be. We show you only what you want to see and you see only what we are ready to show.Editing
I always shoot in raw then use Adobe Camera Raw for light and contrast correction. To give the photo that polished look I used a bunch of actions for post-processing on the skin and then muted that intense blue shade with an action in Lightroom. In my camera bag
I love my Canon 85mm lens, but in this particular event I rented a wide-angle lens, because the cafe was small, there wasn't many place to walk around to focus.Feedback
Don't be afraid to try new things! Something can seem really weird at first, but you never know if something works until you try. I've seen a lot of expositions where photographers play with the light, but it can be really hard to find a good studio with required gear, so I've worked with what I had. Needless to say it turned out even better that I could've imagined. Also for me it's very important to know the model beforehand, so we'd both be comfortable to move and work around. This was our first 'fashion' shoot, so it was purely experimental. Therefore, the model did an amazing job and acted natural and we had a lot of fun. The dark spots on their face only magnified that intense gaze they often give people.
