Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Central Wyoming between Casper and Alcova in the Bates Hole area.

Time

The was a pink moonrise that occured last summer.

Lighting

This was a pre planned shot using two different cameras then blending the exposures. Photos were taken on the same day during the moon rise.

Equipment

Both photos were shot with two separate cameras on tripods. One of the moon was a Cannon 7D with 100-400 lens and the other Cannon 5D Mark III using a fisheye lens.

Inspiration

I had scouted this area in Central Wyoming on previous occasions and I used PhotoPills phone app to see if the foreground would line up with the moonrise. I knew the full moon would not show up as the right size as seen with naked eye in one exposure so decided to set up the two cameras to complete my idea of the shot.

Editing

Edited both photos in Lightroom and blended them together in Photoshop. In the post editing I decided not to correct the fisheye effect and keep the foreground horizon round to match moon.

In my camera bag

I use mainly Canon Dslrs with the exception of having one Sony A7r......most of my lenses are wide angle from fisheye up to 24mm for landscape. My favorite Cannon Lens however is the 70-200mm. I have two tripods one being a Gitzo carbon fiber and Manfrotto aluminum with quick release plates. I carry a multitude of polarizing and graduated filters, but none were used in this photo.

Feedback

If you are trying to capture a landscape and full moon using a wide angle lens the moon will just show up as tiny dot. Therefore you will have to take at least two shots one of the foreground with a wide angle and then one of the moon with a zoom lens. You can find numerous videos on youtube showing you how to blend multiple photos in photoshop.
