Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the outer caldera of Mount Bromo (which you can see in the background, the volcano with the smoke coming out)

Time

This is a sunset shot, so it was getting colder already

Lighting

No special lighting used, just natural lighting from the setting sun and bracketing the shot for details in the shadows.

Equipment

This photo was shot on a Sony A7 RIII with a 24-105mm lens. No flash or tripod used.

Inspiration

We asked the Tengger horse rider to pose in front of the setting sun, so we could make a environmental portrait of the horserider including the sunset and Mt Bromo in the background.

Editing

I bracketed this shot, so I could get back some of the shadows in the foreground but not blow out the highlights in the sky. So I combined two shots in post processing.

In my camera bag

I always pack 1 camera with 3 lenses on my trips. I like a light backpack, but do not want to miss a certain focus length. I always bring my 16-35mm zoom, my 24-105mm zoom and my 70-200mm lens. This way I cover all focus lengths.

Feedback

As the horse rider will be back-lit in the photo, you best bracket your shot and maybe use a bit higher ISO for a faster shutter speed, or else use a gradient ND filter to make the sky darker, but then you risk to also darken the horse rider.
