The California ground squirrel lives in the western USA They are living in burrows which they excavate themselves. They are hardly go away more than 50 m from it. Rattlesnakes are their major enemy. But they have a clever strategy: They super-heat and swish around its tail, which makes the squirrel too big for the snake, which works with infra-red radiation. The message to the snake is easy: I am not dangerous and too big for you to eat me.
Other predators are eagles, raccoons, foxes, badgers and weasels.
