This was taken at the Colorado Lantern Festival in Erie, CO. It was a first for me, and shooting action at night was a new challengeTime
This was taken around 9:00 PM, just after the majority of the participants began loosing their lanterns into the cool, night sky.Lighting
I wanted to give the image a feeling of hope, but really tried to give a large sense of scale. Therefore, I choose to expose the image with a bias towards the highlights.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon 70D, 24-105mm f/4L, and a old Sunpak - 6000PG 61" TripodInspiration
I spent time in China around 2006 and remembered attending a festival there releasing these lantern, but had no photo equipment that could capture it at the time. So, when given the opportunity and just beginning to think of myself as semi-professional, and semi-competent, I jumped at the opportunity.Editing
Shooting in low light, or in this case, nearly no light conditions, with and APS-C sensor required some post work: especially with this image being shot at ISO 3200. In Lightroom, I dropped the highlights, sharpened a bit and definitely did some noise reduction. However, I did not want to over do it, so the image still has a bit of a grain/noise to it, which I feel adds for it.In my camera bag
I often shoot out of my truck and travel, so I've built the back seat out to carry my kit and other adventure gear I may need, so: I almost always carry two bodies: Canon 5D mIII and Canon 70D (occasionally there's a GoPro of some vintage thrown in). As far as lenses, there are many in my Burton Bag: Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L mII, Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L, Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 mII, Canon EF-S 10-18mm 3.5-5.6, Tokina 17-35m, Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 (my magic lens), an assortment of tripods and B+W filters, flashes and remote triggers, and Manfrotto tripods.Feedback
A few simple items: a wide angle, wide-aperture lens, a tridpod, and a venue. Do your research and check to see where fun events are happening and plan your shot out in advance. Other then that, shoot RAW, use mirror lockup, and get creative!
