Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken in my front yard in El Cajon, California, on a lovely spring day.

Time

It was early in the morning and the hedge in our front yard was almost a solid sea of pink blossoms, I took a lot of shots but this one was my favorite...

Lighting

I used the softness of early morning light, which was good for the soft effect I was trying to get..

Equipment

This photo was taken with the Canon 5D Mark IV, Canon 180mm macro 3.5L lens. It was handheld f/5.6 1/100 shutter,ISO 100

Inspiration

The hedge was unusually beautiful in early Spring covered with tiny pink flowers, I wanted to see if i could isolate a few of the blossoms and create a background with the softness of the colors. The 180mm macro lenses creates some beautiful bokeh, which was the case in this shot.

Editing

I did do some minor cropping and highlight and shadow adjustments...

In my camera bag

When I pack my bag for a shoot, the first thing in the bag is my Canon 5D Mark IV body, for walk around shoots 24-70mm 2.8L can't be beat, for close-up or flower shooting my 100mm or 180mm macro Canon lens or Lensbaby Velvet 85 or 50 great lens for having fun, creates some beautiful pics. If I'm doing landscape shots i take my 16-35mm 2.8L another great lens!

Feedback

The art of photographing flowers is an individual thing, probably the biggest thing I have learned is patience, and not to be to hard on your work, I often take pictures I think are not very good, if I just leave them alone and come back later they often look a lot better, I think my original expectations are gone and I can really see the photo for its own merits. When you shoot flowers you look at them from all angles, shoot up, down, right, left, shoot from behind, then decide which shot you like best. I have also learned to use textures to replace busy backgrounds, sometimes you can't move your subject or flower to the background you want, so you add the background in post processing, it has made a huge difference in my finished work.
