Behind The Lens

Location

I was visiting a workshop in brussels in belgium. After the workshop was done and the model short before going home, i grabbed the chance and ask her if she can wait two minutes for a special shooting idea with me. Because we had a good connection during the day, she consented, although she hardly spoke a word of english and I could only explain with hand sign and a nice translator my idea. So I ran down the floors of the house to my car and snapped my skateboard, run up again and show her the skateboard with my integrated logo. She really loves the idea and gave me a few extra beautiful expressions and free poses with the board. I loved the picture also and so i started a personal signature series with my board. The goal of the series is to capture 100 girls with this board and make a big poster which i will send to all of them. This was a very spontaneous idea, but I can create a very unique series.

Time

When I photographed this picture it was in the afternoon and the shooting day (a workshop) was already over. Then there comes this idea in my head to create something special and different to the others on these Workshop.

Lighting

I really wanted to use a very soft light for her, to stand out her young and pretty face. So i grabbed the big octabox (150cm) as a lightformer, which we used for another picture earlier the days and placed the model (Titziana) directly under the lightformer. Because the first testshot gives me not that right feeling of a soft light in her face, i asked her to move nearly 30 centimeters away from me and closer to the white wall behind her. This is one of 10 pictures and all of them where really beautiful, but i only published this one. So in short facts: 150cm Octabox, 20-40 centimeters above her, and nearly 20-40 centimeter in front of her, showing directly to the empty ground.

Equipment

For this shot i was using a Nikon D810 with a 50mm Sigma Art lens. Because all my money goes away for the Nikon D810, i must rent this lense from a friend for this day and was very nervous if the lens will be sharp enough or have the right focus. Its a strange feeling to have only one chance for a picture which is coming in your head and you only have a borrowed lens. So i wanted to go to the save way and captured this shot in f8. I used a very low powered flash with a big lightformer on it (Octabox). I only used this single lightsource in front of a white wall, a few meters behind her.

Inspiration

That really comes like a flash in my mind. After so many beauty shots of this girl the hole day, i saw her wearing this destroyed jeans pants and think by myself. Wow, she can not do only beauty looks, she is also a cool skatergirl model. And then the idea was born. In my car a i had this skateboard with my signatue and tried my luck to ask her for this.

Editing

The picture lookslike a little bit unreal but i didn´t do so many changes in the post. I recovered a little bit the highlights and the shadows and add just a bit clarity and then i tried a little bit to enhance the picture with dodge and burn. But just a little bit. The hole post-processing time was about 15 mintues. Okay, with the healing brush i deleted two imperfections in her face, but this was nearly like nothing.

In my camera bag

I try myself to simplify and so i doesn´t want to have so many lenses with me. Even i´m on the budget i cannot have so many lense. On this picture i used a borrowed lense only for this day because i heard that the sigma art series was a really good series and i wanted to try them. After this shot i decided to buy it instead of rent. Now in my bag i have my Nikon D810, my 50cm and 85cm lenses, because i only want to change my lens if there is a good reason for it. 50mm works for me all the time, exept i want to make really close headshot. Also in my bag there is duc-tape and some clinches. So i can fix most of the situations to find my right angle or fix the clothes.

Feedback

There are two big advices i really want to share with all. 1.) Come into a good connection with your model. Just talk a few minutes with her or him and explain what you wanted to do. If the model is on a good mood you have the chance to take awesome pictures and can be very proud of the results. Talk with the model and explain her what you want, if possible show her a picture or describe her a situation. 2,) Maybe also important like the first advice, do not keep your ideas back. If you have a idea and nearly a finished picture in your mind what moves you, try to do this. Ask the model to help you to realize this idea. Don´t be afraid of doing thinks. Make mistakes and learn from it. Sometimes i´m afraid to ask a model if the wants to create a specific picture (a idea in my mind) with me and then i push me to ask her and try my luck. Until now, never i get a bad feedback. But please think about the first advice, be nice to the model. The needs to get instructions to create art with you and no commands.
