This is a great shot. I worked in the base metal industry for twenty-five years. Great memories.

Great work in an unforgiving environment. I was that guy for many years. Did you like absolute darkness when all the lights were off?

This is magnificent. (And PatrickHouse—I got to experience absolute darkness once—it was horrifying. You guys are amazing...).

Amazing, I felt if I was standing facing him rather than looking at a photo. Very envious.

Thank you, for the reminder of my growing up. My father was a hard rock gold mining contractor and later a supervisor/manager at now closed Homestake Mining Company, Lead, SD.

Location
This photo was captured at Stillwater Mining CO. In SouthWest Montana.Time
This was the taken during the day shift, but obviously time of day is irrelevant when taken underground.Lighting
The most difficult challenge is keeping your gear dry and clean.Equipment
I shoot a Nikon D800, 85mm F1.8 Sb910 speed light and Prophoto triggers.Inspiration
The miners who work narrow vein underground mines are among the hardest working people I’ve ever crossed paths with. I was inspired to capture a portrait that displayed their work environment.Editing
I did very little post editing. I only boost a little contrast in Lightroom. In my camera bag
50mm 1.8, 85mm 1.8, 70-200 2.8, 24-70 2.8, 3 x SB910 flashes.Feedback
If you try and underground mining shoot, plan on tons of water seeping from above and dust/dirt everywhere. Make sure you keep your equipment covered and bring lens cleaning supplies.
