Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken in Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden on the outskirts of Kolkata. It is this Garden which houses the Great Banyan Tree of over 250 years old. The trip to this botanical garden in March 26, 2017, marks my first photography trip with a group. There were other elderly photographers and enthusiasts. The theme of the trip was macro, but we all ended up shooting large subjects as well because the garden is a rich storehouse of photographical subjects (everywhere is, for that matter, though).

Time

We reached the Garden at 8 am. It took some time before all of us were ready with their gears all set up. As macro was the theme of the trip, we started out with shooting dragonflies flying about abundantly. Then we were taking all sorts of things including landscape. This photo was taken at 10:33 am, after exploiting the area for two and a half hours. Well, I couldn't completely "exploit" it and plan to visit the place soon again.

Lighting

It was all natural light. It was end-Spring slanting light; and to top it, trees all around of various kinds provided a good amount of shade.

Equipment

I carried my first DSLR Canon EOS 700D, which I bought only last October. Along with it there were the two lenses Canon's 18-55mm and 55-250 mm. This shot was taken with the 55-250mm lens

Inspiration

The strange structure of this tree immediately caught my attention as I walked along one lane in the garden. The symbiotic-or-so relationship between trees and climbers-creepers awes me: how the strong supports the weak without complaining is incredible and teaches us a good lesson. I guess this is one old climber growing around an older tree. It's like a baby holding on to its mother and its life revolves around hers, which is how I have named it. Mother-child relationship, the purest for of love, is also something awe-inspiring. So this photo represents two themes at the same time. But it may also be a prop root-- I couldn't stand to look for details about the tree as the others had hurried ahead due to increasing heat and were eager to finish it off for the day).

Editing

Post processing includes nominal brightness-contrast adjustments and some colour adjustments to make this appealing picture even more appealing.

In my camera bag

I used to have my compact camera Canon Powershot A1200 earlier. But after being able to purchase the DSLR with the two lenses mentioned earlier, this is all I have to carry.

Feedback

I guess a photographer must travel to broaden his/her field. So travel. Learn your device- both theoretically and practically. Lighting is very important, so learn of that. Lastly always spend some time with post processing because even little adjustments here and there can do wonders.
