Believe it or not the lowly J-3 Cub played a part in WWII as a spotter aircraft. The army designated it the L-4 Grasshopper the only modification necessary for this metamorphosis was a coat of olive drab paint. This example was departing out of Rusk County Texas during a fly-in breakfast there.

Whole story I could write about this plane. My did was shot down during WW2 and a L-4 pilot couldn't land to get him. So he got low and as he flew over my father gave him directions to friendly French resistance folks that hid him until we could travel. It was a swamp somewhere near St Lo Fance. very cool shot
