Location
I took this in front of my home. I have a plant hanger my husband made for me and every spring I try to find baskets to hang from it with a new type flower that I've never used before. These ruffled pansies were so bright and whimsical that I thought they would be perfect in pictures.Time
My home faces east, but we also have several large oaks in front of my home, so I had to wait until almost 10am for them to be in full sun.Lighting
I am completely a fan of natural lighting. I always try to use the available light and then adjust my settings to get the image my mind is picturing.Equipment
This was taken handheld, with my Nikon D3000 which was the first DSLR I used. My husband used to do film photography back in the day with a Canon and had a macro lens for it. I found an adapter online and used his Canon lens with my Nikon camera. No flash was used.Inspiration
I'm self taught and had been working with F-stops. I thought that finding a way to blur the soft ruffled edges while maintaining a hard focus on the bright center would be an excellent way to practice.Editing
This was taken before I learned a thing about post-processing. This is exactly how it came off the camera. I've since learned how to use the software that came with the Canon 60D that I purchased used from a photographer who was retiring. I'm still not that adept at it, but learning is a process. I hope to get familiar enough with my free software that I can graduate to Lightroom or a similar program by the end of the year.In my camera bag
Since buying my Canon 60D, it is always in my bag. I have my 18-55mm lens with me and my 75-300mm as well. I recently starting doing more portraits when my grandson was born and have now added a nifty 50 to my bag as well. It took some getting used to, but I find I use it quite a bit. I also carry microfiber cloths, a mini tripod with flexible legs, and a remote trigger.Feedback
My best suggestion is to not be afraid to take multiple shots. One of my greatest mistakes early on was trusting what I saw in the viewfinder and when I got something I was happy with, I stopped shooting. I have since learned to "play" more. Switching up angles, depth of field, aperture, and shutter speeds can give you insights to a shot that you never even planned for. That's the joy of digital photography. We aren't paying an arm and a leg to process our pictures, so there is more room for experimentation. Have fun with it, find beauty you hadn't envisioned.
