Taken on the penultimate drive of our stay in Ranthambore national park almost at the end of the drive, we came across Lightening. The soft yellow light of the golden hour filtering through the trees and her position allowed for a semi backlit photo. It was breathtaking, and the magic of Ranthambore truly lived up to its reputation.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in India's Ranthambore Nation Park. After years of saving for my kit this was the first major wildlife photography trip i had undertaken, and as I'm mad about tigers this was naturally the first place I'd visit

Time

This was almost the end of the drive at about 17:40 local time. Lightening just sat there for a good 10 to 15 minutes this allowed for a number of photographic opportunities.

Lighting

It was in december of 2015 so we were getting the winter lighting which added to the overall "golden hour" effect.

Equipment

This photo was taken with a Canon 7d mk 2 and an ef 600mm f4 steadied on a beanbag. Nothing else was used

Inspiration

I have always had a love for wildlife, and in particular Tigers. Through a contact here in the UK i managed to get in touch with one of India's top wildlife (particularly tigers) photographers, who owns a lodge on the park edge. So we talked and arranged for my wife and myself to go visit for a fortnight. He advised that the light in Ranthambore was at its best in december so that finalised our timings. After seeing some of his images, I wanted to try a backlit photo but was glad i couldn't get the correct angle as i think i would have lost the detail in the face and body.

Editing

A little noise reduction, slight contrast boost and that was pretty much it to be honest

In my camera bag

I was really lucky this trip, Canon UK lent me a 200-400 (thanks canon) but my kit usually consists of 7d mk2, 1dx mk2, ef600mm, ef28-300 and a sayang 14mm. My tripod is a gitzo 1440 with a large uniquball head

Feedback

Go in december! the light is amazing! hire a gypsie (jeep) Don't take a tripod (you won't have room!) i used a basic beanbag. Be quiet in the jeep :) and trust your naturalist (guide) they are amazing
