The waterfall of Öxarárfoss is located within historically important UNESCO World Heritage Site of Þingvellir in South Iceland.
Þingvellir (Thingvellir) is known for the Alþing (Althing), the site of Iceland's parliament from the 10th to 18th centuries and sits in a rift valley caused by the separation of 2 tectonic plates.
Öxarárfoss translates as Axe Falls and there is a saga related to how the waterfall and river (Öxará) got their names. It is said that during the settlement period in the early human history of Iceland, settlers encountered a frozen river in which they dug a hole into the ice and put an axe in it to claim the land.
