Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken during a walk with my family in a beautiful park in the countryside of Lyon.

Time

This one was like a lucky shot because it was taken when we have decided to leave the nice place we were to be sure to be not too late at home for our daughters. On the way back home, the sun went down when I've seen this flower lighten by the last rays of the day. Seeing that, I lay down on the ground in the middle of the path and I took this photo at 6.30 PM of the March 26, 2017.

Lighting

The main source of light is providing from the sun itself. Because it was the end of the day, the rays were really low and allowed a good light on the flower itself. The background is also something I really like in this photo. A few meters behind the flower, there was a tree (a common Holly) and all of its leaves were reflecting the sun. All of these bokeh are coming from this tree. The both subjects put together gives the result you can see here.

Equipment

This is what I used : Canon EOS 80D EF100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM

Inspiration

Well if my answer is : the spring, I'm not sure you'll be convinced and you'll be right because it's a part of the real answser. So, the true story ; since the spring was there, a new thematic was starting on a lot of nature specialised pages I subscribed on Internet: the flowers. There was a lot of very good photos by talented guys and I saw that a lots of the photos I liked was the one where the bokehs were present. That's why this day I tried to have this kind of result on a spring's thematic (the flowers).

Editing

This photo didn't requires a lot of processing but in the original image, the flower wasn't highlited as I wanted. So I contrasted the image and I accentuated the shadows around the subject and the bokehs. I also added a bit of sharpen on the flower itself with a bit of blurred at the bottom. After that I increased a bit the black tones of the image. Due to this work, the flower is clearly visible and bright in comparaison of all the things around as the bokehs.

In my camera bag

I always have my EF100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM because I always use it for the style of photos I like ; the proxy and macro photography. But I like to pack my Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM simply because between the moment I leave my car and the moment I'm at the place I wanted to be, I walk and during this time I often see beautiful landscapes around me. I also always have my Tripod (ALTA PRO 263AB 100) which is useful when I need stability.

Feedback

Open your eyes and observe a lot around you. Try to imagine how the light and its reflection could help you in the construction of your image and in the emphasis of the subject. Dont' forget the background when you find your subject. It will add shapes, shadows, colors in your image and help in the composition. The bokeh in the photo are made with the reflections on the leaves behind but there are a lot of other useful things for that like the water, the morning dew,... A last advice I could give you is this one : it's not a shame to be layed down in the middle of a path :) I mean, be at the height of your subject.
