Behind The Lens

Location

The shoot was done in the home of newborn Autumn. She was the first baby born to my daughter’s best friend. They have known each other since elementary school. The new mama asked me to do a maternity shoot and then the newborn shoot. I was touched that she asked me and wanted to give her something special. This has been consistently one of the favorites.

Time

It was an afternoon shoot so we could utilize Autumn’s sleepiness after eating to get the shots I wanted.

Lighting

This shot was taken in a room with the lights off, but with nice light softly bathing my subject from a window in the hall. I couldn’t have asked for better lighting and didn’t have to do anything but place my subject in the light.

Equipment

This shot was taken with a Canon 30D with an 85mm lens. No other equipment was used. The natural light right where I wanted it and a black shirt draped over the father’s arms to hide all but his hands and Autumn’s little feet gave me exactly what I was aiming for.

Inspiration

The new father is a fireman. I wanted to get a shot for him that would show strength and gentleness, love and protection. When I was about to tell him that he was sitting with Autumn’s tiny feet cupped in his hands and I saw what my shot was going to be.

Editing

no post processing was done.

In my camera bag

I always carry a second battery no matter what else i may bring. I often only have the camera, an extra lens and battery and lens cleaning cloths. I have a lot of good extras but i often feel bogged down and enjoy my shoots better carrying less. Unless I have a specific job or idea in mind that requires me to carry a heavier load I generally don’t.

Feedback

You are only limited by your own imagination. I didn’t know this was the pose until I saw how Autumn’s father was sitting with her. A few adjustments, the other room with the perfect light coming in from the hall, the shirt over his arms - each thing thought of after the last. Once I saw the light in the other room and moved them in there, then I saw that his bare arms detracted from what i wanted the focus on. Then i thought of the black shirt to throw over his arms and this was my happy result. Just keep shooting and trying new things. New angles, look closely before scrapping a photo. There may be something great to crop out from it. Allow your creativity and imagination to take you in new directions. And crop out what distracts from your subject. That seems to be the advice I give the most. Happy shooting, everyone.
