I was out photographing bears near between Banff and Lake Louise in the Spring like I often do since I live in Banff when I came across this beautiful 1 1-2 year old male bear. Banff park staff know all the bears and their individual history very well. This poor guy has a sad story.

He was a twin and in the previous week his mother died when she was struck on the nearby highway by car and they never found his twin. They trapped her the next week and ear tagged her to keep tabs on her to see if he would get into trouble. They gave him a less than 50% chance of surviving on her own.

Against the odds, he did.

I photographed this individual bear many times over the years since I first photographed him. He's huge now, almost half the size of my prius. They call him the Boss here in banff National Park and he dominates the landscape. But, to me, he'll always be know as this scared little guys affectionately known as Quill.
