Again, I love the angle of this shot. The sky is beautiful and the helicopter is looming like a monstrous locust. Well done

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Macquarie in Vaucluse NSW Australia. The police/fire rescue helicopter were there, and allowed me to take some photos of the helicopter.

Time

This was taken around 6:20pm, it was a day and time to remember. We had planned to visit Hornby lighthouse but our gps navigation took us to Macquarie lighthouse instead, however in the end we achieved some great results including a memorable shot of the police/rescue helicopter.

Lighting

I used natural light from the sun. The time of day was juat before sunset which allowed me to achieve a perfect soft light in the shot.

Equipment

I used the sony a77 with the 1650 f2.8 lens. This shot was taken hand held with a polarised filter.

Inspiration

Originally i went to Macquarie lighthouse to take photos of the lighthouse with the sunset. But listening to so many great photographers out there, i went there with an open mind observing my environment and spotted the rescue helicopter. They were preparing to go out on a rescue, and i have a lot of respect for people who put their lives on the line to rescue people who are in danger and therefore I wanted to capture something that really grabs the viewer's attention and as a result the viewer will be able to appreciate the significant contribution of the fire/police rescue people .After numerous tries this image was the one that caught everyone attention, it is bold and expresses the huge contribution of the fire/rescue officers.

Editing

I post processed the raw file in photoshop, doing two separate images one for the sky and the helicopter. Making both well exposed and having the right colour and white balance on both which has allowed the image to pop out making it more eye grabbing for the audience.

In my camera bag

The equipment i normally carry in my bag is the a77 with the 1650 f2.8 lens that i use mainly for landscapes. Also i carry the a99 with the tamron 70200 f2.8 for alot of close up shots that i won't be able to capture with the 1650 f2.8. I also carry polarised filter and nd filters depending on weather or not i want to do some long exposure shots or not.

Feedback

My advise i would give to others, would be the same advice that was given to me by other photographers. When going to locations keep an open mind of your surroundings and don't just focus on what you want to capture. Because if you do go to a location focusing on that one goal you intend to miss those spontaneous moments that i find usually the most exciting and intriguing shots. Also, always try in different angles and position, it is better to take over 20 images and have that 1 perfect image then to have taken a few and no perfect image.
