Location
Ndutu region of Serengeti National ParkTime
It was mid-morning when our safari vehicle driver located this young Cheetah with its two sibling and mom. We happened upon this family group first seeing two of the young cheetah’s chasing a Jackal as the mother appeared to be instructing them in huntingLighting
While the lighting was a bit harsh in late morning, the facial expression of this young Cheetah was amazing and made this image one of my favorite shots of our entire trip to Tanzania.Equipment
This image was shot with a Canon 7D with a Canon 100-400mm Lens on a beanbag rest.Inspiration
We were very fortunate to locate this family group of Cheetahs and observed their activities and interactions for almost an hour. During that time, I found the facial expressions that the young cheetahs showed an almost human quality. Our safari group was fortunate to find and photograph these big cats as many other safari groups failed to see any cheetahs at all!Editing
This image required minimal processing in lightroom. In my camera bag
Currently I shoot with two bodies a Canon 7D2 and a Canon 5D3. My most comply used lens is a Canon 100-400mm version two lens and since the many of my shots are of wildlife a Canon 600mm prime lens. Included in my bag are Canon 1.4 and 2.0 extenders for the really long distance images. I also include a Canon 600EX flash and Better Beamer Flash Extender for extra fill light.Feedback
The best advice I have for shooting wildlife is to be prepared to shoot at all times, frequently check and adjust your camera settings based on light conditions. It is useful to have two camera bodies readily available, one with a long range prime telephoto and another with an intermediate zoom telephoto for when the animals come close to your safari vehicle.
