Behind The Lens

Location

This photo is of the entrance way into Trinity College Dublin. A college founded in 1592 , it is amongst the most elite colleges in Europe.

Time

I awoke very early on a chilly Irish morning in mid November . I got up around 5am to get the first train into Dublin City Centre, I initially went in to photograph another area of Dublin but walked past the entrance way into Trinity College and knew I had to stop for a few photos.

Lighting

The time had past for the early morning golden hour but it did not stop me from creating this image. The very dark entrance way made for a bit of a challenge. I put the camera on a tripod to take multiple exposures. First exposing for the forground and then for the background to get some details in clouds. I then blended them together in 'Lightroom' through a HDR blend mode to have everything exposed to the way i wanted it.

Equipment

I shot this with a canon 700d with the standard 18-55mm kit lens. The tripod used was the velbon df 51. No flash was used.

Inspiration

I got off the tram very early, around 6am and walked around capturing street photos of Dublin. As the morning stretched on I could feel the hustle and bustle of early commuters, workers, students and just early risers like myself. Walking down Dame Street and walking past the college entrance I knew it was an area I was going to photograph. I walked around the grounds of the college first to get into the right mindset , I took a few nice photos around the grounds that I was happy with and I called it a day. I packed away my camera and walked back out the way I came in and the Archway to the entrance just grabbed my attention, I had to get a few more shots with the arch and the nice architecture around it. It goes to show that when you think you're done, you're not done .

Editing

I done all my post processing with 'Lightroom' . When I was out with the camera I captured multiple exposures of the scene so I could show as much detail as I possibly could. I blended the images together so that I could have good detail in the foreground and keep the detail in the clouds. The correction brushes came in handy. I used clarity brushes on the ground to give it a 'wet' look along with bumping up the vibrancy and saturation in areas of the image. These can be seen on the grass and in the clouds.

In my camera bag

I have a big camera bag for hiking and capturing Landscapes. I have my canon 80d on hand at the quick access part at the top. I usually keep my 18-135mm lens attached to it because its an all round good lens with good range. In the compartment bellow that I have my very first lens the 18-55mm (a lot of the time I'll leave this out of my camera bag to save space) . I also carry the 50mm prime 1.4 lens. Great, crisp images from that beauty. The compartments near the bottom of the bag are full of different neutral density filters and ring flash mounts. Attached to the side is my tripod. Its all basic enough equipment , you don't need to much. Your love for photography and drive to capture something knew is all you really need.

Feedback

If you are looking to get images of Dublin streets or the Trinity College grounds defintely head in early. It is a toursit hot spot from around 11am to around 6pm but get in before classes start. 8am would be good, if you time it right in the winter you can get a beautiful golden hour shot around that time of the morning (depending on the weather) . Also take your time with shots like this. More often than not i'm in very overcrowded areas and have to wait it out or postpone it to another day. Prepare yourself and your gear for the images you want to capture and everthing will find a way of working out .
