This photo was taken in my studio where I work as a Technician Demonstrator at a University, as part of a continuing project of 5 minute photo shoots where I give myself 5 minutes to complete the full shoot of an object or several items.Time
I normally do studio work on a Friday afternoon as that is when the studio is quieter and I can just nip in and shoot.Lighting
I like to challenge myself with different light sources, like torches, various lamps, Arri continuous studio lights, candles etc., but for this shot I used 2 Bowens 500W flash heads with soft boxes, using a mid-grey paper backdrop.Equipment
This was shot handheld on a Nikon D800 with a Sigma 50mm f/2.8 macro lens, and 2 x Bowens 500W flash heads with soft boxes attached.Inspiration
I've set myself an ongoing project of regularly completing a series of 5 minute photo shoots, where I choose a subject (one of my favourite cameras in this case), and complete the whole shoot from setup to take down in 5 minutes. As I work as a Technician/Demonstrator at a University and run a busy Fine Art and Photography resource area, I often only have a few minutes to help and show the students with the set up of their shoots, and am often asked to document objects and artefacts from a range of students and sources, so it's good to keep in practice. My main specialist area is working with traditional and alternative film based processes and printing so I use a range of film cameras including Rigby pinhole, 35mm, medium, and large format cameras, inlcuding cameraless photography.Editing
I do work to get most of what I want in an image captured in camera, but do use minimal amounts of post-processing to enhance what I want from the final image.In my camera bag
It does depend heavily on the subject and situation, bu I normally have the D800, Sigma 24-70 f/2.5, 50mm and 85mm. Luckily my job has a lot of perks, so I have a cupboard full of a wide range of lenses, so I can often choose and use what is needed on the day. I've always got a few film cameras with me as well, primarily the Rolleiflex 3.5f, and Ensign Ranger Special II rangefinder, a Lubitel 2, and often a bomb proof Pentax K1000 with a 50mm f/1.7 - I have been on several location shoots with 8 or 9 different film cameras at a time, so my old Lowepro roller backpack is used a lot.Feedback
Think about what you are shooting, and what you want before you start - work with a goal so you can shoot what you need in a short timeframe rather that choosing what works best from hundreds of images.
