I found this beautifully clean and fragile lambs skull on a hill 20 years ago. To give you an idea of scale it is 3.5 inches wide. I cut a hole in some black card the same shape and a bit smaller than the bottom of the skull. I placed the card on top of four tins of mushy peas (one at each corner) then rested the skull over the hole. I put a smoking incense cone underneath it. The skull and smoke were lit from the right hand side (as we see it) by a slave activated old flashgun which had black card strapped to either side to prevent the flash from lighting my black background or produce flare in the lens. The left hand side was lit by a lamp which also helped to aid focusing on the smoke. I blended in the smoke from three different exposures. I moved the incense cone between shots so the smoke travelled different paths through the skull. I did not change the colours in the photo, just the saturation, to make a more interesting version of reality.
