Behind The Lens

Location

The photo is from the Lighthouse at Plocica isle, mid-Adriatic (Croatia). There is a small stone hut near the jetty where in the old days the fuel has been stored, and the window is still there, though unusable.

Time

19-Dec-04 14:36:11

Lighting

Here goes: Shutter Speed, 1/250 s... f/7.1... ISO 64... 0.00 eV... Flash Off... Focal Length,15.6 mm. The window is on the shady side of the hut for the whole day, so that's pretty good rendering. :)

Equipment

I've had two cameras on the Lighthouse, and the one used was a SONY DSC-F828 (now sadly deceased). The shot was taken out-of-hand, no add-ons of any kind.

Inspiration

Plocica lighthouse was built in 1887, and although it was nicely restored to accept faraway-places-loving guests, the building still has many details of its original features. So there is no way that any photographer worth their salt would miss recording those. And age brings it's own kind of beauty even when it's been additionally decorated by wear and decay, because it reminds us of the Tools of Time that we too must eventually yield to. Inspiration enough, wouldn't you say?

Editing

It took some cropping so as to makethe frame more interesting, and I also liftted some shadows to reveal more color. That was about it.

In my camera bag

A standard question here gets a standard answer! So I have this answer ready, and just cleverly copy / paste! I find it easier to carry a photo vest than any photo bag. So I load my photo vest with whatever I might need for my photo session, walk or trip, while my photo bags usually keep the equipment I'm not using at the moment. The vest's many pockets usually contain two cameras, spare batteries, ND and CPL filters, and one photo clamp standing in for a tripod. Recently I include a small action camera, mainly for its wide field of view and resistance to water and weather. The vest also has large-lens pockets that contain a small water bottle, sandwich, or a bar of chocolate if I plan on being out for the whole day. There is about three meters length of paracord or similar strong, thin rope, one hefty pocket knife, and a lighter. My smartphone comes along too. It has yet another spare camera, but more importantly the Spirit Level App wich I use to make the phone a perfectly horizontal surface under my camera. This is essential for panoramic sweeps. The app is free, and requires no extra permissions whatsoever. The large back pocket of the vest is reserved for a lightweight rain poncho. If the weather suddenly plays up, the poncho neatly covers all. Using the tools mentioned above, much can be improvised along the way, so that's all I need to make photos.

Feedback

Once you've seen it and found it interesting enough, it's no rocket surgery to photograph an object like this one. But instead of explaining simplicity, let me use the space for a message to all the people which enter and create our Challenges: - DEAR ENTRANTS: before submitting your work PLEASE READ CAREFULLY what is being required! Photographers should be able to understand the basics, instead of just dropping any photos anywhere. Wrong photos won't win - so why bother? - HAVE NO PHOTOS that fit a Challenge? Simply do not enter! Submitting just anything is called "spamming", which is uncouth and boring. Such a "me too" attitude only destroys your photographer credibility and makes you appear ridiculous. If you're not sure, message the Challenge creator and ask for explanation! - MEMBERS NEW TO PHOTOGRAPHY... please distinguish Black & White (ZERO COLOR) from Monochrome (ONE COLOR) and from Partially Colored Images. Also note the world of difference between a SHADOW and a SILHOUETTE, PORTRAIT and FULL FIGURE, CLOSE-UP and MACRO, NUDE and PORN, etc. Photographic terms exist for a reason. It only takes a bit of learning. - CHALLENGE CREATORS: All entries found non-compliant with the Challenge requirements should be REMOVED, simply out of respect to all the responsible entrants! It is unfair to allow any wrong image to run together with correctly submitted entries. Even worse; picking a Winner from among the wrong entries only reveals one's judging incompetence. Competitions should be taken seriously to be fun - both for creators and contestans. Thanks, and have a Good Light!
