Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at the Norfolk MSV Racing Circuit Snetterton, at turn 1, "Riches"

Time

This was taken at around 1.20pm, and the weather was wet and windy, fortunately the rain cleared just long enough for me to set up my equipment and get the shots needed.

Lighting

Nothing special with the lighting here. Just natural daylight.

Equipment

I used my Canon 5D MKiii, with a Canon 16-34mm F2.8 Lens, Mounted on a 6M Carbon Fibre Rig from Car Camera Rig. I also used a Nisi Polarising filter, Nisi 6 stop filter, and a half grad filter.

Inspiration

I was inspired to take this photo because Snetterton is my favourite and home circuit, the car? I'm simply just a massive BMW fan, I worked at the circuit for 3 years and just love the place, for me this image encompasses what Snetterton is about, fast exciting racing.

Editing

Yes a lot. I use Lightroom and Photoshop. With a 6m carbon fibre rig, you have to remove it in processing, and then put a driver in the car, because whilst taking the shot, the car is just being pushed during a long exposure with no one at the wheel. I then applied my own specific workflow and techniques to create the image.

In my camera bag

My 5D MKiii, A Canon 600 Speedlight, A Sigma 150-600mm F5.6 for sports and wildlife, an under rated, cracking lens. A Canon 70-200mm F2.8 for weddings, and lifestyle portraiture, lovely and crisp. A Canon 50mm F1.8, because every Canon owner should have one. And my Canon 16-34mm F2.8 for my car rigs and Landscapes. I then have a wired trigger for the Camera, and my set of Nisi Filters for Landscapes and car rigs. A Manfrotto tripod and monopod.

Feedback

My advice to others is to just get out there and have a go and experiment. I have learnt so much more through making my own mistakes than I have from any tutorial and theory.
