Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in the fall of 2016.

Time

I think it was late in the afternoon. I remember that, because I was worried that soon I will not have enough light to take more photos of my friend's dog.

Lighting

I didn't use any other light source except the natural light at that time of the day.

Equipment

For this photo I actually used my old Nikon D90. I still have it and can't give it up. I don't use it that often anymore, but around that time I just received as a gift a Sigma 24-105 mm f4 art lens. I still didn't purchase my next camera, so of course I took out the old Nikon D90, put on the lens and went out to play with it. I had no flash with me. It was a casual walk in the park and I had no intentions of taking some "memorable" photos. I used my friends dog to see how the lens performs for action shots.

Inspiration

I think this was just one of those "oh look, the dog is still" moments. Tari was sitting waiting for a command and was sniffing the air. I randomly took the shot before I got up and walked further. Didn't even check the shot on my camera, until I got home.

Editing

Yes. I did use some post processing. I used Lightroom to adjust a bit my exposure, contrast and clarity. I also used a radial filter to warm up the light in the background. I liked the photo, but there was no "action" happening. So I decided to use Photoshop and add some leaves to create a bit of dynamic in the direction Tari was looking

In my camera bag

I normally use my Nikon D750 with the Sigma 24-105 mm, f4 art lens. I also use my Fujifilm X-E1 mirrorless camera. I am mostly focusing on outdoors shots. Landscapes, Cityscapes. I use a travel tripod for landscapes. That's pretty much it. I own 2 Yongnuo flashes with a wireless flash trigger and a softbox for my indoor experiments. But recently I noticed that I carry with me just the Nikon D750.

Feedback

I am a beginner still, so my advice for those like me is to never stop taking photos. With each photo taken, there is something to learn. And the best lessons come from the bad photos.
