Behind The Lens

Location

This is a photo of the old powder mill site on Dartmoor in Devon, England. Ruins of gunpowder mill. Established in 1844 by a Plymouth alderman George Frean. Originally quite an extensive complex of buildings running up the valley with several water wheels turned by water from a leat and with 2 chimneys. All the buildings are now in varying degrees of ruin although one chimney survives and 3 main groups are recognisable of granite rubble with granite lintels, all roofless. The chimney is well constructed with stringcourse near the top and plinth. It has a covered channel running downhill from it towards the largest ruinous building. The invention of dynamite in 1867 rapidly superceded gunpowder. and the mills, which employed about 100 men closed in the 1890s.

Time

This was getting on towards sunset.

Lighting

It had been an overcast day but as the sun was going down you get that eerie light which gives everything a bolder colour.

Equipment

Being a very lazy photographer I only ever carry my camera which at the moment is a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ200.

Inspiration

I hadn't visited the old powder mill ruins but had passed by on the road many times. On this particular day I wasn't in my usual rush to be somewhere so had time to stop & walk over the site.

Editing

I little cropping & slight adjustment to the exposure to compensate for the fading light.

In my camera bag

Not a lot really. A tripod in my car that rarely makes it out & my trusty camera. I chose Panasonic's because they are light weight & easy to carry around all day.

Feedback

If there's something of interest to you, find the time to stop & visit. You never know what you will find & photograph.
