Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo between two beach boxes on a beach on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, Australia.

Time

It was in the middle of the day. A time I would not usually shoot a portrait, but I wanted to capture this moment, so we went into the shade of the beach boxes.

Lighting

Having the subject in the shade but facing out towards a large and bright light source (the sand and water from the beach) is what gives this photo it's striking look.

Equipment

I was shooting with my Canon 6D and a 50mm lens.

Inspiration

The subject. She was peaceful, and the salt water was almost crystallizing on her skin and hair. I wanted to capture that. And of course her beautiful freckles.

Editing

I made some significant changes while colour grading to warm up the image. Which was very cool. And I brought in some texture in the hair and the reflection in the subjects eyes.

In my camera bag

Canon 6D and a 50mm lens and a 35mm lens.

Feedback

If you like a moment you don't always have to wait for the right light. Look around your environment and get creative.
