Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in the north of Lazio region in Italy by a small stream

Time

This would have been mid morning so not really the best time, but it was the time I could get along.

Lighting

I love that the sun was actually pretty high as it slights up the wings beautifully. The shadow is also minimised and this focuses the attention on the dragonfly

Equipment

This was hand held with a Sony A7 , I think shot with a 300mm sigma manual focus lens

Inspiration

I love seeing new (to me) wildlife and I wanted to capture the beauty of the wings on these damsel/dragon flies. They don't stop for long and I knew I had to pick a spot and hope they would land there. Patience.

Editing

No not much , just a bit of cropping and some slight changes to brightness and shadow.

In my camera bag

I tend to now travel with only two lenses and try and keep my kit light, but the lenses may vary. Generally it will be the Sony 24-240mm which is a great all-rounder but not quite long or indeed wide enough for me. So I will either bring something longer such as 300mm, 500mm or a 14mm . It all depends on the sort of shots I anticipate for the day.

Feedback

Yes thats easy , anyone can do this as you just need patience really rather than expensive kit. It obviously helps to have better equipment but I was using an old manual film lens so pretty cheap and my dslr was very second hand when I bought it. I suspect that you could do a similar photo using a modern phone with the built in telephoto, so this is open to pretty much most people, just have patience and don't move about too much and the insects will eventually land and you can take the photo.
