Acoma Pueblo is built on the top of a small mesa, and space is limited. Most of the pueblo is 2-3 stories high. They do not use inerior stairways, but rather exterior ladders. This cross-piece held together the three uprights that formed a double-width ladder, Everything heavy-duty, since the ladders get so much use. Everything including water is carried or hauled up and down.
