There is something terribly disturbing about this 'resigned' posture in two noble beasts. No more ice? Hungry, ill or dying? Congratulations on the prize, but is there any background info to this photo?

Interesting and beautifully composed photo. Congratulations on being a finalist! (And, yes, just curious but what is the story behind this photo?)

I shared your image publicly on G+ with the correct accreditation naming you as the artist. Wanted to let you know here. This image really made me laugh and lighten up today. Timing is everything.

Hi there.. I have been quiet on view bug for quite awhile. I was in Kaktovic on the Arctic Circle, with a small group of photographers. and we are witnessing the small families of Polar Bears waiting for the sea ice to form... ...Poignant.

Location
Kakatovic, AlaskaTime
This was taken on a morning boat trip. TLighting
The light in this northern latitude is soft with the sun low all day...much of the time it was overcast so the light was uniform.Equipment
Canon 7D markII; Canon 300 mm f 2.8 prime IS II lens; 1.4x extender and a siriu tripod and really right stuff ball head.Inspiration
I was really impressed on this trip by the reality of climate change..These particular bears seemed resigned to wait, and wait...The bears are waiting for the sea ice to form so that they can go hunt and eat.. Historically the bears are gone from this area by early to mid September when the sea ice begins to form..there was no sea ice, and the formation of the sea ice is getting later and later in the season, leaving the Polar Bears to hungrily wait... This new normal for them has not occurred gradually enough for any helpful biologic adaptation to take place. It is a terribly sad situation. Once the sea ice forms they leave to go out to sea to use the ice flows as a base to hunt seals from....The bears are waiting, waiting,,, hungry. awaiting the sea ice to form. A sobering sight. We Know what this means and as individuals we feel helpless... it MUST be a global effort....or the planet loses..Editing
Typical post processing, Light adjustment, increase in contrast and clarity..In my camera bag
For Wildlife photography I use my 300 mm f2.8 and a 1.4x extender and Canon 7D markII (effectively 670mm), a Sirui tripod and really right stuff ballhead and Wimberley Sidekick. I also have a Canon 5DmarkIII, 70-200 mm 2.8 lens, 24-70 mm 2.8 lens always with me as well...Feedback
Go on a guided photography trip....excellent people I have traveled several times with: Aaron Baggenstos (Aaron's Photo tours); Dan Cox (Natural Exposures)... take advantage of their expertise and learn!! I have a couple of other trips lined up with other photographers that will likely be amazing and everyone has a different pearl of wisdom to offer!
