This photo was taken near my home in South Gippsland, Victotia, Australia. I am a self taught "astro" and nightscape photographer, who has become addicted and obsessed with clear night starry skies. There is nothing else on this earth, that can lift the mood, than the wonder of "where are we in the universe" It never ceases to amaze me.Time
I had this shot in mind for about a year, before everything lined up nicely. I really wanted to capture the Milky way at high tide on the beach I played on as a child. When I arrived at it was about half tide and I realized I was a bit early for my shoot. So I set up and waited for the tide to come in, getting eaten alive by mozzies. Once I started to shoot, however, I lost track of time and the tide came in around me. Before I knew it, I was standing in a foot of water, but I didn't care. I found the scene mesmerizing.Lighting
I was so pleased with the reflections of the stars and Venus in this shot, I almost missed a very faint and sneaky little Aurora to my south. It was a very nice surprise and adds a little extra to the shot I thinkEquipment
This was shot with a Canon 600D, Tokina 11-16mm F2.8 lens at 11mm and 2.8, ISO 6400 for 18 seconds, using my old Giottos tripod I've had since the days of film and a cheap remote shutter release I purchased on ebay!Inspiration
I love to shoot the Milky way, it's that simple. However, this is a shot I had in my "minds eye" for awhile. Its a place that is special to me and I wanted to capture the beauty that it has at night under the stars. During the day, it's unremarkable, no beautiful cliffs or crashing waves, just mud flats and very low tides, but at night it shines.Editing
I took a series of photo's, basically from South to North, so 180 degrees. I created the pano in photoshop and adjusted the white balance and reduced the noise a bit, as it was shot at a high ISO.In my camera bag
When I'm out and about, I think about what I may come across to photograph, so I like to carry a wide angle and a zoom lens. I feel that way I am covered for most situations, landscape to wildlife.Feedback
Feel your shot. Imagine what you want to capture and go for it. Understand that something that is unremarkable by day, can look amazing at night. Be prepared, be patient, love where you are.
