This photo was taken in Brookfield Place, an amazing galleria in downtown Toronto. I am an amateur photographer and I am always searching for new and interesting scenes to capture if I can.Time
I work in an office and at lunch time I go out to roam Toronto’s streets looking for something interesting to capture – dark and light, lines, angles, reflections, textures and people. This photo was taken around 1:00 p.m. in the afternoon.Lighting
I am standing at the bottom of the stairs in the lower concourse of the galleria. I wanted to capture the silhouette of people just as they reached the top of the stair. As the people emerge from the darkened lower level into the bright upper concourse, the glass ceiling provides wonderful lighting to capture a silhouette.Equipment
I used a Nikon d3200 with a wide-angle lens.Inspiration
The scene had an element of mystery as the figures emerged from the dark lower level into the bright light of the upper concourse. The stairs railings provide wonderful leading lines to the silhouettes at the top of the stairs. From where I am shooting at the bottom of the stairs you cannot see what lies ahead of the couple. You are left with questions. Why are they here? What are they looking for? What is their destination? The only thing we know about them is that they are doing this together – they are holding hands.Editing
For post processing I darkened some of the lights that showed up in the lower concourse to add to the darkness and emphasize the difference between the dark and the light.In my camera bag
The shot was taken with my Nikon d3200. More recently I have purchased a Nikon d7500 and I am trying to learn how to use all the features on that. For my lunchtime excursions in Toronto I travel light with just the camera and a variable 18 – 85 lens.Feedback
When you are shooting in the city it is important to pause for a few minutes and really study your surroundings. You need to take the time to see what is there. Every day brings something different, and with it, a potentially interesting photo opportunity.
