Behind The Lens

Location

I shot this photo the same day as "Park Ambassdor" another zoo picture (of a wild Heron by the penguine cliff) at the Woodland Park Zoo of Seattle WA.

Time

The time was about an hour after "Park Ambassdor" so it was late afternoon and almost closing time for Woodland Park with about 3-to 4 hours of daylight left.

Lighting

Sun was brightly west and about half way between high noon and sunset. I intentionally set camera for under exposure because I remember reading about how taking similar precaution(s) would minimize the loss of details especially those of the highlights.

Equipment

I attached the Sigma 300mm F4 AF APO lens to the Nikon D3300 then I handheld the setup. And I manually focused because auto focus is not functional in this combo. It was sunny and I had fun shooting with this lens at f8 - f16 most of the time.

Inspiration

I felt good after shooting pix of the Heron at the penguine cliff and I hope to score images of water reflections. Hight sight being 20-20 I wish I had switched to a shorter focal length because I did not captured the whole reflection from the Flamingo.

Editing

I used DxO 10 pro to restore details in the highlight areas which I under exposed. And, I cropped the bank opposite of me, because there were the distracting feet of the other Flamingos.

In my camera bag

Not the 300mm. Probably a Tokina ATX 35-70mm F2.8 or the Nikkor PC 180mm F 2.8. And, the Nikon D3300 is my only body.

Feedback

Be happy and take lots of pictures. Practice makes photography fun.
