As I traveled the maze of roads and trails centered in the heart of the valley, surrounded by the Rockies on all sides, many barriers keep one barely within reach of the relegated past. I respect peoples' personal and perceived privacy and ownership. I've been tempted to knock on doors or approach them for permission to get closer, but most seem very guarded and weary of strangers. This I understand. The degree to which I have experienced here is unique in its degree. Alaskans are known for being fiercely private and defensive about their privacy and property, but I feel it is stronger here. Maybe my radar is off and it is me. But I have never seen as many signs anywhere in the world as I have here. Even on roads and areas I know are public or public lands.
