Location
The photo was taken at the Butterfly House in the Seattle Science Center.Time
It was taken mid day. The environment is a greenhouse with diffused lighting and very few shadows.Lighting
I had perfect, bright diffused lighting in a greenhouse environment.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon 5D Mark III, hand-held. You have to be fast to catch the illusive critters.Inspiration
From reading photographer Tony Sweet, I try to look for background colors. Sometimes it just means moving your shooting angly a couple of inches. The butterfly was just far enough away from a pink flower cluster that i could bokeh the background.Editing
The only post-processing was cropping. In my camera bag
My bag usually contains a Canon 5D Mark III and a 7D Mark II. When shooting wildlife I carry a Sigma 150-600 telephoto. My go-to utility lens is a Canon 24-105mm F4 L IS.Feedback
A Butterfly House is a good situation for capturing those flighty insects, and good practice for "in the field". Try to keep your lens perpendicular to the wings so the whole butterfly is in focus. Bright lighting and a fast shutter speed also help. I have found that using a flash results in an "artificial look".
